There is no single reliable national spot price for poultry-feed maize or soybean meal. Prices vary by state, supplier, volume, transport cost, moisture, processing quality and payment terms. A quoted price is therefore only the beginning of the purchasing decision.
The stronger decision is to compare delivered cost with usable nutritional value. A cheaper ingredient can become expensive when it contains excess moisture, mould, foreign material, poor processing or inconsistent nutrient quality.
Signals worth watching
Global soybean context
The August 2026 USDA outlook projects substantial global soybean supplies and provides a reference point for protein markets. This does not translate directly into a Nigerian soybean-meal price because exchange rates, processing, logistics and local availability remain important.
Weather and feed grains
Adverse weather in major crop regions can affect crop quality, trade demand and global feed-grain sentiment. Nigerian buyers should watch these developments without treating foreign futures or forecasts as local cash prices.
Maize quality
Check moisture, mould, insect damage, broken grains and foreign material. When quality varies, compare the cost of usable dry material rather than relying only on the price per bag.
Soybean-meal quality
Confirm that the material is properly processed and consistently sourced. Colour alone is not enough. Poor heat treatment, overprocessing or adulteration can reduce the value of an apparently cheap purchase.
Practical interpretation
Do not change a working formula simply because one ingredient's quoted price moved. First confirm the new delivered price and quality. Then update all ingredient prices together, reformulate, check nutrient balance and calculate the full cost per kilogram and per bag.

- Collect at least three current quotations for maize and soybean meal in your own market.
- Record whether each quotation includes transport, loading and other delivery costs.
- Inspect representative samples before committing to a large purchase.
- Measure maize moisture where possible and reject visibly mouldy material.
